The challenge

Keep the charm of a tactile physical map while giving visitors as much information as an interactive screen — without anyone walking away with a tablet.

What Awake! delivered

A projector lights the relief model: the selected districts are highlighted and rivers draw themselves, controlled from a touch-panel menu. Three tablets on rotating mounts surround the model — they can be turned but not moved — and show augmented reality: interactive points and 3D models precisely aligned with the physical map through object tracking. We evaluated gyroscope-based alignment, LiDAR tracking and mixed-reality headsets before choosing the final approach, starting from a quick Android prototype.

Outcome

Visitors explore the region on a real model and dive deeper on the tablets without leaving it.
